What unfolds is anything but. With two mechanically minded companions and little more than optimism, humour, and an old Series III Land Rover named Lucy, the trio set off from Cambridge on a journey that will test the limits of endurance, friendship, and faith. From the snowy passes of Spain to the vast expanse of the Sahara, they confront mechanical breakdowns, bureaucratic chaos, and dangers that no map could predict. As Lucy rattles across borders and into the unknown, she becomes more than a vehicle – she becomes a lifeline, a symbol of resilience and grit. Along the way, encounters with militants, Bedouin warriors, and families living on the margins of survival strip away assumptions and expose the raw, humbling beauty of the human spirit. But when illness strikes and Andrew finds himself fighting for survival in an African hospital, the journey takes on new meaning. It becomes not just a test of will, but a reckoning with vulnerability, purpose, and the fragile miracle of life itself. Told with warmth, wit, and unflinching honesty, A Land Rover Named Lucy is a true story of adventure and endurance, a reminder that sometimes the hardest roads lead us home.‘What a great read! An intrepid tale of adventure and exploration across Africa with blood, sweat and tears .... A must-have for any adventurer’s bookshelf, this book will inspire you to push comfort zones, cross horizon lines and break free from the ordinary and mundane … do try it!’ – Josh James, Bushman, content creator and adventurer. ‘This book reminded me of why people chase adventure in the first place. His plan was to fly to Australia, which was sheer madness as he only had a mere 39 flying hours under his belt. When he landed at Wyndham 18 days later no one was expecting him. His flight the third fastest after veteran aviators Bert Hinkler and Charles Kingsford captured the world's imagination. The press dubbed him 'Sundowner of the Skies'. Unlike most of his contemporaries who died in crashes, Oscar survived and went on to a career in commercial aviation. In April 1940, he delivered the flying boat, Awarua, to Auckland for Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL), the forerunner of Air New Zealand. In 1943 he became TEAL's Chief Pilot and Operations Manager and steered it through its formative years. He left suddenly in 1947 and never flew a plane again. Sundowner of the Skies is a fascinating and compelling biography of Oscar Garden, an unsung hero of aviation, written by his daughter. He was also a very flawed and troubled man. This deeply personal story reveals Garden's failings as a father and the cascade of trauma and violence that has shunted down the family line. Remarkably, the author's compassion for her father shines through. AUTHOR: Mary Garden is an author and a journalist, with a PhD in journalism (University of the Sunshine Coast). Her memoir The Serpent Rising: a journey of spiritual seduction, first published in 1988, won the 2021 High Country Indie Book Award. Sundowner of the Skies: the story of Oscar Garden, the forgotten aviator was shortlisted for the 2020 NSW Premier's History Award. Her latest book My Father's Suitcase, a memoir on intergenerational trauma and surviving family violence, has won multiple awards. Her work has appeared in a range of publications, including The Humanist, New Zealand Herald, The Weekend Australian, The Guardian, Newsroom (NZ), Meanjin, New Zealand Geographic, and scores of aviation magazines. Born in Whakatane, New Zealand, she made Queensland her home in the late 1970s. 110 b/w photographs 'Beautifully written, Sundowner of the Skies is no hagiography. In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day, eight people were dead. Krakauer's book is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, Into Thin Air clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other Everest trips throughout history. The author's own anguish over what happened on the mountain is palpable as he leads readers to ponder timeless questions. One of the inspirations for the major motion picture Everest, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley. Together, they embarked on a quest not only to witness the majesty of America's wild landscapes but also to heal generations of struggles and misunderstandings. Over seven years, they sought to visit all sixty-three US National Parks. From the towering peaks of Denali to the otherworldly beauty of the Everglades, each park became a classroom, teaching them profound lessons about nature and about each other. The pioneers who attempted the first climbs in 1922 and 1924 knew nothing about the mountain other than its height. They had to learn the hard way about the lack of oxygen, the jet-stream winds, the illnesses of altitude, and the vital importance of the Sherpas. They fought cerebral oedema, frostbite, hypothermia and raging thirst in the cold, thin air. They had to find a route, avoid avalanches, and work out what to do when confronted by an insuperable rock climb at extreme altitude. Many of them died. Howard Somervell was Mallory's closest friend on the mountain in 1922 and 1924. He was an exceptionally gifted man: he had a double first at Cambridge, he was a talented artist and an accomplished musician. He served as a surgeon at the Battle of the Somme during the First World War and was one of the foremost alpinists of the day when he was invited to join the 1922 Mount Everest expedition. After Everest he was awarded an Olympic gold medal for Alpinism in 1924. But in India he will be remembered as a surgeon who dedicated the remainder of his life to healing the sick. Those pioneers showed the way. Somervell took part in the first attempt to climb the mountain, and his oxygen-free height record in 1924 stood for over 50 years. On his descent he sat down alone suffocating from a frost-bitten larynx. He prepared to die, but at the last moment performed a medical manoeuvre which cleared his airway. He survived to struggle back down. Howard Somervell was my cousin, and I am one of the last Everesters left alive to have spoken with a climber from George Mallory's party. AUTHOR: Mountaineer and sailor Graham Hoyland was the 15th Briton to climb Mount Everest and initiated the Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition, which was responsible for finding George Mallory's body. Hoyland was a BBC producer for over 30 years and worked on programmes such as Dragon's Den. These twenty-one essays, spanning one of British mountaineering's most exciting periods, provide a compelling narrative of a life studying the art of climbing and of living it first-hand on the cliffs and mountains of the world in the company of some of the sport's most colourful characters of the last century. Vivid portraits anchor the collection: the legendary Joe Brown and Don Whillans, members of the Rock and Ice Club; American pioneers Royal Robbins, Jeff Lowe and Warren Harding; and unsung originals such as the Barley brothers, Robin and Tony. A wide-ranging 1973 interview with climber Allan Austin gives a fascinating insight into the Yorkshire scene of the early 1970s. Dennis's commentary expands to cover other issues, such as the 1932 Kinder Mass Trespass, climbing's debut in the Olympics and the development of modern rock climbing in Belgium. Broad in scope yet precise in observation, Essays from the Edge celebrates the values and spirit of British climbing. AUTHOR: Dennis Gray began climbing in 1947, aged eleven. By fifteen he had tested himself on Yorkshire's gritstone outcrops, Skye, the Lake District, North Wales, Glen Coe and, in winter, Ben Nevis. After school he studied printing and ran a photogravure unit reproducing Old Master prints. During national service in Manchester in 1954 he joined the Rock and Ice Club, climbing with Joe Brown and Don Whillans. He first visited the Alps in 1955, climbing in the Dolomites and Alps with Brown, before making the first ascent of the Manikaran Spires in 1961. Throughout the 1960s he organised expeditions to the then-unclimbed Gauri Sankar (7,134 metres) and, in 1966, to Alpamayo (5,947 metres) in Peru's Cordillera Blanca; the expedition film of which, The Magnificent Mountain, won best mountain film at Trento. He also climbed in Yosemite. He went on to study social psychology at Leeds and in 1968 led a successful expedition to Mukar Beh (6,069 metres) in Himachal Pradesh. After a short spell in Kenya he returned to Britain in 1970. Appointed the British Mountaineering Council's first professional national officer in 1971 and its general secretary in 1974, he served for eighteen years. His first autobiography, Rope Boy, appeared in 1970. With his former wife he launched the Boxing Day Chevin Chase in 1979, a seven-mile race in Otley attracting over 1,500 runners. After leaving the BMC in 1989 he led climbs and treks in the Himalaya and Morocco, then returned to academia in China, lecturing at four universities. He completed three research projects at Oxford and later served a term as a Churchill Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge. Mountain Lover, his second autobiography, was published in 1990, and later books included stories, a novel, essays and poems. In 1995, he cofounded the Leeds Wall, the UK's second climbing centre. He has travelled to over sixty countries and remains in touch with friends worldwide.

An epic journey, undertaken with courage, and recounted with flair and humor Truly hilarious books are rare. The ‘perfect storm’ is a once-in-a-hundred-years combination: a high pressure system from the Great Lakes, running into storm winds over an Atlantic island – Sable Island – and colliding with a weather system from the Caribbean: Hurricane Grace. This is the story of that storm, told through the accounts of individual fishing boats caught up in the maelstrom, their families waiting anxiously for news of their return, the rescue services scrambled to save them. It is the story of the old battle between the fisherman and the sea, between man and Nature, but here Nature is an awesome and capricious power that transforms the surface of the Atlantic into an impossible tumult of water walls and gaping voids, with the capacity to break an oil tanker in two, let alone the 72ft swordfishing boat Andrea Gail with her crew of eight. A typical Hurricane encompasses a million cubic miles of atmosphere and can contain enough energy to, in theory, meet the electric power needs of the UK for a decade. Except that a hurricane will not be controlled. In spare, lyrical prose ‘The Perfect Storm’ describes what happened when the Andrea Gail looked into the wrathful face of the perfect storm.

The charming sequel to the bestselling The Unlikely Voyage of Jack de Crow When A.J. Destination made, job done.' Steve Moneghetti 'A must-read for anyone looking to explore their full potential.' Jessica Stenson In January 2024, Donna Urquhart set the world record for the longest run in a polar region by completing a 1402-kilometre ultramarathon in Antarctica. She had trained for nine months, running on a treadmill in a refrigerated shipping container and also in an industrial wind tunnel. To achieve the record, Donna ran up to 60 kilometres each day across 28 days in the coldest, windiest and driest desert on earth. Some days, the temperature plummeted to -20 degrees Celsius and the winds reached a brutal 80 kilometres per hour. Donna is a pain researcher and well-versed in the science of pain and how humans can cope with it. She is drawn to exploring the limits of human performance, and she pushed herself to the extreme to discover what she was capable of, gaining insights that now help her navigate everyday challenges. In Life Without Limits, Donna has brought together her comprehensive toolkit for understanding and handling pain and adversity-whether physical, emotional, mental or social-showing that all of us can challenge our boundaries and thrive: at home, work and everywhere in between. A captivating story of human growth and potential, this book will leave you asking: what might be possible in my life if I dare to live without limits? WHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM THIS BOOK: •Discover the science of pain and gain insight into how we experience pain and what strategies can help us cope. •Explore psychological approaches for performance and wellbeing and how we can apply them to our daily lives. •Learn the core principles of managing emotions, including how to recognize and regulate them effectively. •Understand how to navigate social challenges and draw on supportive relationships that help us thrive even in difficult times.

The extraordinary life of the daring adventurer who defied ice and fire - war photographer, Antarctic explorer and adventurer - by Australia's No.1 bestselling historical biographer, featuring a foreword by Hurley's granddaughter From the moment he ran away from school at just 13, Frank Hurley carved a path as one of the greatest adventurers of all time.A visionary photographer and film-maker, Hurley journeyed to the farthest corners of the earth, capturing images of people and places few had ever seen. The fate of George Mallory and Sandy Irvine, who were last seen disappearing into the clouds as they headed for the summit of Mount Everest on 8 June 1924, still grips the imagination over 100 years later. Mallory’s body was found in 1999 and Sandy Irvine’s boot and foot were discovered in 2024, becoming an international news story. Drawing on previously unpublished material and new discoveries, Irvine’s great-niece Julie Summers and mountaineering historian Jochen Hemmleb (who was part of the team that found Mallory’s body) have written the definitive account of the expedition from twenty-two-year-old Sandy’s perspective, challenging misconceptions about his role. They also bring to life all the remarkable characters involved in the attempt on Everest and reveal fascinating discoveries about what really happened on the men’s final climb. A captivating story of adventure, daring, despair and triumph from Australia's favourite storyteller.Last century, two men, thirty years apart, set out to become the first to conquer the highest point in the world. Their names are synonymous with adventure - George Mallory and Edmund Hillary. One travelled from England, the other New Zealand, both seeking to test human endurance and defeat the most extreme elements on earth - blasting winds, vicious vertical ascents, lack of oxygen and freezing temperatures that could kill in minutes. Mount Everest has long been an obsession for many, and the quest to stand at the top of the world still drives thousands every year to push themselves to the limit. But all are following in the footsteps of two great adventurers who, in a time very different to now, dared to try.On 8 June 1924, George Mallory and Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine, part of an eight-man British expedition, set off from their final camp at 28,000 feet above sea level to ascend the summit. They disappeared. The question of whether Mallory died on the way up or while descending was still a mystery when, on 29 May 1953, Edmund Hillary, part of a thirteen-man Royal Geographical Society expedition, along with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, set off from their final camp for the summit. At 11.30 that morning, Hillary became the first person to stand at the top of the world. Norgay was a split second behind. They saw no evidence that Mallory and Irvine had been there before them. In THE RACE TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD, Peter FitzSimons illuminates the lives of these two pioneering explorers, Mallory and Hillary, and those who were with them along the way - Tenzing, Irvine and George Finch, an Australian whose pioneering work on the use of oxygen was instrumental in climbing ever higher - and describes in compelling detail what brought them all to the mountain. Revealing the courageous men behind the names, their years of intense planning and preparation, and the ongoing mystery of Mallory's disappearance, this is an epic story of adventure, daring, despair and triumph.

Filled with epic outdoor photography and a wide spectrum of profiles, this impressive and visually rich volume celebrates the courage, persistence, and sense of renewal that define every climber's journey. Sensitive to the experiences of beginning climbers-and of the truth that every climber, no matter their level, must repeatedly face the uncertainty of gaining a foothold-this book offers a global portrait of what it means to move upward despite fear, doubt, or the unfamiliar. Structured around 22 profiles, it highlights climbers from a range of backgrounds and disciplines: bouldering, rock climbing, big-wall routes, ice climbing, deep-water soloing, and indoor climbing. Each story reflects early attempts, setbacks, breakthroughs, and the quiet determination that makes climbing a lifelong practice of beginning again. The accompanying photography-alpine vistas, desert rocks, sunlit gym holds, nighttime campsites, and candid moments of camaraderie-immerses readers in the climbing lifestyle with remarkable immediacy.
